Aortic Aneurysm Scans
To examine the main artery leading from the heart into the abdomen, which over time in those with high-risk factors, can widen so weakening the walls of the vessel leading to an aneurysm. This enlarges over the years and can lead to a catastrophic rupture of the aneurysm.
A scan is the ONLY way to tell whether you are at risk of developing this condition.
Carotid Artery Scans
The carotid arteries of the neck can be examined for narrowing of the vessels, causing poor circulation to the brain. This process can cause dizzy spells called transient ischaemic attacks, and can lead to a stroke.
Recent studies show that screening for these conditions would identify those persons at risk of either a stroke or other catastrophc event.
Varicose Veins Scans
Ultrasound can identify the cause and extent of varicose veins in the lower limbs, which are unsightly and can cause chronic problems.
Deep Vein Thrombosis Scans
Economy class travel has been blamed for the increasing incidence of deep vein thrombosis, where blood clots form to block the leg veins. These clots can travel to the lungs and cause collapse and even death.
However any situation when the legs are immobile and in a cramped and small space can lead to this condition, usually presenting as a painful and swollen leg.
Scans can examine the deep veins of the leg and identify a large proportion of DVT’s, but some clots in the smaller calf veins cannot be identified
